Policy Advocacy: Defending and Strengthening Protections for Immigrant Survivors of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault

From the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence

DESCRIPTION: Abusive partners and perpetrators of crime often exploit victims’ lack of immigration status or dependent immigration status as a way to keep immigrant victims silent and avoid any repercussions for their actions. Recent changes in immigration policy are undermining the protections created by a bipartisan majority in Congress through both the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) and Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA). This shift is sharpening abusers’ tools, giving new force to their threats, and increasing the risks to victims of violence. In addition, our asylum laws are being undermined, threatening access to life-saving protections for those fleeing gender-based persecution in their home countries.

This webinar is designed for advocates who wish to learn more about how recent changes in immigration policies impact immigrant survivors of gender-based violence, and what advocates can do to help defend and strengthen protections for survivors in the face of the mounting obstacles to their access to safety and justice in the United States. (Please note that this webinar is NOT intended to address survivor immigration case practice strategies.)
